Cantelowes
Cantelowes ward takes its name from the landowning Cantilupe family and the grand manor house that was once here. Roger de Cantilupe, a 13th Century priest in St. Pancras relocated to Cantelowes to avoid the flooding and swampy ground there. Cantelowes is still largely a residential area with some very large houses and attractive cobbled mews. Cantelowes Gardens, currently under renovation, is due for completion at the end of 2005 and includes a skate park, sports pitch and pavilion. The ward is also home to the Lion and Unicorn theatre, an established venue on London’s fringe theatre scene.
