The clamped council parking van |
Renegade road warrior turns tables on clampers
Illegally parked traffic wardens jeered after rogue clamping
THE tables were turned on parking wardens when a maverick “motorists’ champion” took the law into his own hands and put the clamps on the clampers.
Two attendants were caught out when they left their marked white van on double yellow lines in Ferdinand Street, Chalk Farm, last Wednesday afternoon.
When they returned, they found their wheels clamped and the vehicle immobilised.
It was the swift work of an anonymous parking rebel, well-known in the area as a popular family man but keen to keep his identity a secret.
Assisted by an accomplice, he used an abandoned clamp that he salvaged earlier this year to strike back on behalf of disgruntled drivers.
Unable to remove the clamp themselves, the attendants had to summon help and awaited the arrival of colleagues in another van before they were freed. They were heckled by passing drivers and residents took the opportunity to film and photograph the scene. Pictures were passed on to the New Journal on Monday.
The anonymous parking rebel said: “It (the clamp) had been abandoned and I took it into safe custody. “When I saw the van on clear double yellows I decided that this was a golden opportunity too good to miss – to return the clamp to Camden. I’ve watched hundreds of distressed clamped motorists. This van was abandoned for a long time in a street quite clearly marked. “It’s as if there is the ‘one law for us and one law for them’ attitude which is showing contempt for the general public.”
A press official said the Town Hall was taking the incident on the chin.
He said: “We are ending the use of clamping in Camden after residents told us they felt it was an unfair and over-zealous response to minor parking infringements. “We hope residents are not picking up where we have left off.” |
