Pedal dissenters hit Heath

SCHOOLCHILDREN deliberately broke heath by-laws on Friday to protest against cycle path restrictions.
Bob Spellar, premises manager of Hampstead Parochial School and joined by Green Party Councillor Maya De Souza, Lib Dem eco champion Alexis Rowell and members of Camden Cycling Campaign, the pedal dissenters made an active plea for a new path to link up the two existing disjointed routes on Hampstead Heath.
The campaigners, who want to be able to ride from the north to the south path without being penalised for straying, say the rules make it difficult for children to cycle to school.
Highgate Councillor Maya de Souza, who has written to ask Lib Dem council leader Keith Moffitt to take up the matter with Heath guardians the City of London, said: “Children going to school in Gospel Oak or Parliament Hill from Highgate or the north would really benefit from safe cycle paths.”
A City of London spokeswoman said: “There’s four routes. The routes are being looked at in a new draft management plan, which will be going out to consultation probably by the end of the summer.”
